Meet our Academic Advisor Ph.D Ahmet Kasım Han!
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet K. Han is the Academic Advisor to Açı Model Government Europe (ACIMGE - http://www.acimge.org/ ) project of Açı Schools. He is with the faculty of Kadir Has University, Istanbul, Turkey where he serves as Advisor to the Rector, Chairman of Procurement Commission, Member of Board of Turkey Studies Centre and Member of the Advisory Board of Research Centre for Middle East and African Studies. He is also an adjunct faculty member with Turkish Armed Forces War College Institute of Strategic Studies and Academic Advisor to Joint Forces Academy. In this capacity he has been teaching courses on Strategic Thinking and Processes and has also designed and ran a training program on “Strategic Negotiation Skills” targeting staff officers that have been assigned to NATO and other international posts that require high level international and cross-cultural negotiation skills. He is a member of the board of EDAM, a leading Turkish think-tank. He has formerly been associated with TESEV and served as the Director of Research Centre for Politics and International Relations of Istanbul University and member of faculty with MBA Programs of Istanbul Bilgi University. He has been a visiting scholar in University of St. Andrews’s Centre for Syrian Studies in Scotland in 2011 and at Tel Aviv University’ Moshe Dayan Centre for Middle Eastern and African Studies in 2014. Prof. Han was awarded a “Young Leaders of Europe” scholarship on U.S. Foreign policy by the Department of State / U.S.A in 2003. He has been an observer for NATO on ISAF operations in Afghanistan, twice in 2005 and 2010. He has participated in organizing and running crisis simulations for Turkish Armed Forces (2008 onwards), NATO (2009;Azerbaijan – 2011; Algeria) and since 2007 for private corporations.
He is a frequent contributor to major international and national TV networks including BBC, CNN Turk, ITN, NTV, Deutsche Welle, Al Arabiya etc. and has been hosted in over two hundred and fifty TV shows. He has over 150 op-eds and interviews published by Turkish and international press including The New York Times, Jerusalem Post, Christian Science Monitor, National Geographic, Associated Press, Anadolu Ajansı, Svenska Dagbladet and Huffington Post. He has also been a columnist for Turkish Dailies Radikal and Referans and a TV host for NTV where he has served as a Foreign Policy Advisor. His op-ed pieces have appeared in national and international news media. He holds a PhD in International Relations from Istanbul University (2001), and following his PhD has studied international negotiations at the Harvard University (2005). His B.A. is on economics and international relations from Istanbul University (1991) and he received his Masters degree on Middle East and Central Asia Studies in 1995 from the same institution. As part of his studies for a second Masters degree on Business Management he also has studied finance in Koç University (1996). His academic interests focus on strategic studies, strategic thinking and culture, international negotiation, energy issues, international relations theory and foreign policy analysis and decision-making. His other publications deal with issues of Turkish foreign policy, US foreign policy, Turkish – American relations, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Middle East -with special emphasis on Israel, Iraq, Iran and Syria- and systemic changes and future of the international system.
Dr. Han is a frequent speaker in international and domestic conferences and round tables organized by think tanks, NGO’s and governments. In this capacity he has been invited as a speaker and provided expert opinion in over a hundred and fifty conferences and meetings internationally. A short list would include; NATO Parliamentarians Assembly; Department of State (USA); Department of Defence (USA); Italian Foreign Ministry; British Foreign Office; G-8 and G-20 Agenda Setting Meetings; NATO Summit Agenda Setting Meetings etc. He is and has been a member of Track II Negotiation Committees and High Level Expert Panels on Iran nuclear, Af-Pak and Eastern Mediterranean Gas Resources issues.
In addition to his academic studies Dr. Han has experience in private sector both as an executive and an adviser. He has assumed executive positions as a project manager, international capital markets coordinator, international commodity markets coordinator and CEO for private companies in services, finance and industrial production sectors. As a strategy and international relations adviser, he has and is working for private companies and serves as a board member in Turkey for companies in defence, energy, construction and logistics sectors. In such capacity he has been responsible for realization of diversified projects including founding of industrial facilities, managing of IPOs, establishment of joint ventures involving Turkish and international parties both in industrial production and financial services sectors. He has been also responsible for direct management and/ or process designs of multi-party inter-cultural negotiations regarding financial transactions and structuring of joint ventures, M&A and division deals. The total value of contracts he has managed, participated in the design and advisory processes and completed amounts to 3,5 billion USD. He also has been the Chief International Relations Advisor to the Turkish Exporters Assembly, the umbrella organization of the Turkish exporting sectors between 2003- 2006 where he has also been the advisor for various WTO processes. Prof. Han is also an invited member of GLG Council of Experts for Gerson Lehrman Group a leading Global Expert Network headquartered in New York and teaches strategy and negotiation skills for Deloitte Leadership Institute.
